It is unlikely that terrorism will ever be fully eradicated--especially while people treat it as a problem in itself rather than a symptom of deeper underlying problems.

Think about it. What kind of desperation would drive a person to believe that an act of terrorism (especially a suicide attack) could be of some benefit?

As long large groups of people feel oppressed, ignored, bitter and angry there will likely be at least some people among them who feel driven to acts of violent terrorism. Thus a "war of terrorism" fought with guns and bombs can never stop terrorism. It may kill some of today's terrorists, but unless underlying concerns are addressed such is more likely to sustain and even heighten the underlying tensions than diminish them, leading to an unending crisis.

So no, a "war on terrorism" as we see it being waged today can never end the threat. Instead it becomes self-perpetuating.

There are two strategies that can work to diminish terrorism: (1) by understanding and solving the underlying problems we can remove the root causes, or (2) we can adopt a totalitarian system so brutal (like the one formerly lead by Saddam Hussein) that not even a hint of dissent is tolerated. Hopefully a rational individual would choose to participate in the former rather than the latter.

Money is the center-focus reason for the "war on terror": Why they struck us and our allies--and why this "war on terror" continues on as it's done for years.

bin Laden wanted BILLION$ more of OUR money, AFTER his Afghan "rebels" fought and defeated Russia back in the mid / late 80's----and we DENIED his request(s). Explains the REAL reason bin Laden hated America---and how easy it became, for those Afghan "rebels" we befriended back then.....to become today's lethal members of Al-Qaeda and Taliban.

You can bet it didn't take long for U.S. war profiteers, lobbyists and D.C. politicians ( which included Bush and VP Cheney ) to catch how this "war on terror" had profit potential for their deep pockets....and it continues to this day, with NO end in sight.

And the Political Correctness infestation within our military armed forces does NOT help matters.......war is war--and it's ugly, nasty, dirty and dangerous: Kill the enemy before they kill us.

CIA and NSA spy power sure has grown since 9/11; exactly how it's grown will likely amaze and panic us.

Actually the current president does NOT want to fight global terrorism, in fact he refuses to call it terrorism. And just the other day he spoke at a mosque in America blasting our republican party. This is the same man who has talked against America when he's overseas. Can't wait to get him out of office.
Let's hope that our future presidents know better. Global terrorism can only be squashed in part. Like anything (the mafia, the kkk) it will still be around but we (Saudi Arabia and the other countries that are working with them in the middle east, and Russia and the USA) need to work against terrorism.

I feel depending on whether a republican gets in or not that that will answer this question, global terrorism in my view only became this bad because of Bush's actions while president. He has put fear into everyone in america and the real issue was bin laden yet he turned Iraq into a terror bed.

This current president did not have to go about dealing with the 9/11 terror attack by going after saddam he has created a nightmare for any future president, the next president who ever that maybe will have there hands full dealing with Bushes mess I pity that person it will be a task that will be very unsuccessful.

So for that reason alone I hope a republican gets elected into office to deal with his crap he has caused.

It may not be very popular to do what our President is doing, but if someone does not stand up to terrorism they will continue to be imbolded and at some point use a neucular weapon somewhere in the world. We surely do not want that to be here. Yes, there will always be terrorism, even in our cities with the murders that go on, but turning our backs to the problem is not the answer. We do not get any support from the countries in Europe, but when it hits them we should turn a deft ear to them. Europe has a real problem in that it's radical population is growing much faster than ours. That is why securing our borders is so important. It is already to easy to get into this country, let alone cross the border illegally. The bleeding heart liberals need to wake up to what is happening.

Global Terrorism :
And the "Stopping Of"...:

A United States Marine told me himself that this particular type of approach to War by the Terrorists is one of the most difficult approaches to fight against.
For example:
The Terrorists use the most effective approaches to gain control,
such as harming or killing innocent children. Innocent women and men. They thrive on intimidation and fear tactics which stem from having no conscience or concerns about Life or the well being of others, including their own.

I spoke to another American Soldier in the NAVY recently who just returned from Iraq and tour of duty there....
He pointed out " How do you fight a Terrorist who only has to make a phone call on his cell phone to another Terrorist who is say some thousand miles away....and says blow this or that up"...??
He went on the explain how his own experiences with the Terrorists are that they are very cowardly...and very poor fighters.
He returns to Iraq soon is what he said. I wish him well too.
It is so so sad that the Terrorists have such incredibly Low Self Esteem that they don't care about Life anymore than they show us all.
P E A C E is what I wish both the Terrorists and All the Vast Number of American Soldiers now who are still in Iraq.
In other words : "Get R Done Boys" and then Ya'll come on home..!
Sincerely,
Jerry Hawkins USA

Does Congress and the international Community have a choice, the war isn't going to stop just because Bush leaves office. Who ever replaces him will still have to deal with the mess he leaves behind.

No one has stopped Global Terrorism in the history of mankind, what makes you think Bush's replacement will?

The President of the United States is, indeed, a powerful person. But he is not God. The only way for GLOBAL Terrorism to be stopped is if enough people around the world want it to stop. Hate must stop being handed down from one generation to the next. Religion must stop being used as a cover for phsycopathic killers. We must all be more educated about each other and share, as human beings, our needs and dreams for the future. We must also find ways to share physical needs (food, clean water, a place to live) without those gifts being tied to political agendas. Most of all, we must look beyond our respective governments to see the faces of the people...we will all be surprised to find how much we look alike. Only then will the people who preach murder and suicide to young people have no audience, and no place to hide.

Terrorism may never end, but it could be mitigated over the next 10-20 years if countries make a significant effort to curtail it. Primary issues--

muslim schools teaching anti-American and Israeli hatred
Palestine becoming an independent state
Israel and it's relations with Arab nations
US Foreign Policy decisions / actions

Of course terrorism will always be around to some degree until the fundamentalists have control of the world. I used to think they would end their ways if Israel was defeated, but that seems to be only part of their agenda today.

Not without a magic wand. Each country will have to take charge of its terror cells to be effective. It cost only $100,000 to train and take the four planes that caused 9/11. Its taken over 300Billion to fight the aftermath. No country can afford to look at the same strategies that were used as diagrams for this new style terrorist activity. Terrorists are in all countries, and there can be no central hub for fighting them. I hope we remember that when it comes time to be told that this nation or that nation is a threat.
