Its crazy that just over a hundred years ago, it was "average" for a woman to have 7 or 8 children! Today average is between 1 and 2 1/2! 1 and 2 1/2! That means woman are even dropping from 3 children, to just 1 or 2. But with the ways the world is changing now, the cost you spend on raising a child alone, is what makes you decide on how many kids you want. It all intertwines you start thinking about how expensive things are, and if you really want to be that parent who can't give your child the kind of life you never had, or you don't want that child to be the outsider in school. So why not make it easier, by getting away with 1 or 2 children to completely spoil, instead of 3 or more. Life in general is just cheaper and easier with less stress!
Wow, I just said really makes me wanna go see "Children of Men". I can't believe I haven't seen it yet!

I think 2 is a good number. Most of the people I've known who are "only children" seem to have wished that they had a brother or sister.
With 2 children you do increase the odds that at least one of them will grow up to be a decent human being--and that you will have at least one child to help you out and look after you in your elder years (this last part may sound selfish, but actually it's as legitimate a consideration as any other in deciding how many children to have).
I think that with 3 or more children the family life becomes pretty hectic and complicated for a good 20 years or so, and it's all too easy (unintentionally, perhaps) to short-change one or more of the kids during their formative years.

I grew up in a family with four kids and that number seemed just right. I think a couple should stop having kids when they start feeling strained emotionally, financially and time-wise. For some couples one kids is more than enough, but I think some couples can handle six or more. Some people really love kids and have the mental, financial and time resources to make a large family work out!

depends on the people and what you can afford. If you are wealthy and have the time and effore to raise them well there is no limit. Thing is that most educated people only have two, sometimes three at the most.
personally, when I see a mother with three kids spaced what looks like 9 months apart I think she is a "baby machine" and has no intelligence. So to me I guess three is too many. Then again when I see pickup trucks full of kids I think of the over population of the planet and wonder when the planet will strike back and wipe most of us out.

You have to know your limit kids are beautiful but can be a handful. Personally I think 2 is enough but 3 is the limit each child would need attention along with other needs. If a child is not given the right amount of attention it can create complex problems etc.... there are major questions are the couple ready? and would the child be well loved and taken care of financially?

With the world population standing at 6 billion some would argue that our planet is already over populated. If you live in China, one is the lucky number. If you live in certain parts of Utah, the sky's the limit as long as all the kids are also cousins.
Bottom line, there is no universal correct answer. The best number of kids to have is the exact number that you and your spouse feel comfortable supporting both emotionally (i.e. love) and financially (i.e take care of their physical needs).
