Primarily, Vietnam. French Jesuit missionaries were among the first to come there. Actually, the Vietnamese alphabet, which if you look at it, resembles the Roman alphabet, was created in part by a French priest, Alexander Rhodes. It was meant to phoenetically translate a very complex language into French. Anyway, the French colony of Indochina was what we refer to today as Vietnam. I believe parts of Cambodia and Laos were also under French control. The French had influence in Southeast Asia from the 17th century to the 1950's. Many Vietnamese of wealth were schooled in France and Ho Chi Minh himself spent much of his early life in Paris. If I'm not mistaken, at one point he washed dishes. He was present at the Paris Peace Conference and irritated when the French Premier and his advisors would not budge on granting Indochina independence as happened in other areas
