there are different types of biodiversity:
genetic diversity - diversity of genes within a species. There is a genetic variability among the populations and the individuals of the same species
species diversity - diversity among species in an ecosystem.
ecosystem diversity - diversity at a higher level of organization, the ecosystem.
it's basically the diversity of living things in a specific place though.. that's more of the general definition
Biodiversity is not distributed evenly on Earth. It is consistently richer in the tropics and in other localized regions. For example, we say biodiversity is higher in the tropics because we can find a large variety of plants and animals (and fungi, bacteria.. etc) in a specific place or ecosystem.
crap.. I suck at explaining ecology.. hope you get the point though. If not then let me know what you want to know about specifically

If you're talking about biodiversity as opposed to monoculture (which you might hear in an ag or ecology class) that is the process of growing many different types of the same crop. For example, there are several potato species that are resistant to the fungus that caused the Great Potato famine and starved people out of Ireland- but the potatoes there were a monoculture (one kind of potato grown by everyone [actually, if I recall from my eco class, it was two kinds, but neither were blight resistant.])
The idea of biodiversity-or in this case agricultural biodiversity-is that if a disease or disaster happens, an increased number of varieties of life make it more likely SOMETHING will survive.

Biodiversity is a measure of the health of biological systems for a specific ecosystem or a planet as a whole such as earth.
It focuses on the degree to which the aggregate of historical species are viable versus extinct in a ecosystem.
It is effected by ecosystem ecological trends, catasthrophes, and mutation, sexual reproduction of species in the ecosystem along with any population bottlenecks.
For example. As an evolutionary biologist you could review the biodiversity of the oceans and changes in the environment for a specific time period in prehistory and catalogue the organisms their populations over time and their endangerment to extinction from a specific phylum and species and review their genetic traits and compare them to modern traits of the organisms in modern times.
