The boundary is convergent, with Africa subduction (or at least trying to subduct) Europe. The result is the Alps. The Mediterranean Sea is due to the bending of the African Craton due to this collision. Strange as it may seem, Italy is part of the African Craton, not the European Craton.

There are no subduction zones as far as I know, so they must be of the type that slide past each other, like the San Andreas fault zone. In some areas, like the Mediterranean, there are areas of orogeny, or mountain building. The Mediterranean sea is slowly being squeezed out of existance as the African Plate pushes northwards, so if you are planning a holiday in the Greek Islands, you had better go next year!
That's the bad news! The good news is that you will be able to go to Tunisia by bicycle!

It is convergent - the african plate is moving north relative to the eurasian plate (pushing up mountains in the process.
