A good substrate for ball pythons is a 70/30 mix of fir bark and peat moss. 70% fir bark and 30% peat moss. This mix is especially effective when trying to keep the humidity level where it should be during the winter or, if you happen to live in a dry part of the country. Just mist it occasionally with warm water. I use it with my snakes with good results.. Aspen and newspaper have no humidity bearing qualities. They make for an easy clean and that is pretty much it. These substrates do better with non tropical snakes like corn snakes, kingsnakes, garter snakes or milk snakes. Humidity levels of 50% to 75% are important for tropical and semi tropical snakes like ball pythons so, a humidity bearing substrate is what you are looking for. Other substrates that have this value are, cypress bed, repti-bark and orchid bark.

Substrate: It has been our experience and observation that ball pythons do extremely well on either aspen bedding or on newspaper. Both are easy to maintain at a satisfactory level of sanitation. Ball pythons can be successfully maintained on a variety of substrates, including, cypress bark chips, and carpet, although some greater diligence may be required to maintain proper levels of cleanliness and odor with these substrates.
i my experience that substrate contain too much moisture and can cause molding plus if you get mites good luck getting rid of them using that. plus when your snake goes to the bathroom youll have to remove most of the coconut substrate around it because it can obsorb so well. when i had my ball pythons i went with cypress or news paper so much easier to clean

Bark is good, too. You have to be careful with both because they hold moisture, they grow bacteria and mold very easily.
I would caution to stay away from cedar mulch. Cedar oils are toxic and can lead to deadly respiratory infections. Plant/Wood based mulches that are safe to use include: Aspen, Pine, Long Grain Sphagum Moss, and Cypress.
The coconut dirt is good, tho.
