I have just taken a horticultural program at the college, and I did a bit of research on the net for you, so here it goes:
The best time to prune azaleas is in early spring, before the plant puts out new growth. Although you'll be cutting off that year's blooms, it gives the plant the full growing season to fill out, and time for the new growth to mature before winter.
- Pruning while they are in bloom is next best, and gives you some cut flowers, or pruning just after they bloom lets you enjoy the flowers on the plant.
- Since most azaleas start growing next year's flower buds soon after they bloom, pruning after mid-summer cuts off next year's bloom.

Azaleas should be pruned after they bloom. I'd wait until I was sure all the buds had bloomed and the old blooms have fallen. I would never prune azaleas heavily unless they have really gotten out of shape or are crowding other valuable plants. Never prune more than 1/3 of the plant, but I suggest less 1/4. Probably the end of March is a good time to consider.

right here in East Texas, the dogwood trees and different flowering trees are budding, and a super sort of of the wildflowers and early bulbs are blooming. The azalea path is open the final 2 weekends of this month on the arboretum on the city. that is been up in the 80's the final couple of days, yet we are looking forward to heavy rain and hail immediately. we are probably previous the final stressful freeze or maybe killing frost, yet stressful rain, wind, and hail ought to nevertheless wreck the mushy blossoms.

prune them as soon as they are done blooming. they set flower buds for the following year pretty quickly, so if you wait- you'll be pruning off next years flowers.
