it has large leaves(smaller than a squash) and white flowers turn into prickely egg shaped seed pods at the crook of the branches. Grew to about 4' tall. Died about the same time as my squash plant and I would say it is a vegetable of some sort.

It kinda sound like Datura, Angel's Trumpet, Wright Jimsonweed or Thorn Apple. These are all the common names for one plant which is' Datura wrightii'. I've heard it called 'loco weed. It is poisonous, but people let it grow it their yards.It does go dormant between May to November. Check out images in a plant website.

Heelo there,, after working for many years ina garden center,, I would encourage you to take a snip of your plant down to a garden center and ask one of the knowledgeable staff there.. I am sure they will be most helpful and precise.. good luck
