Independence from who or what? South Africa was one of the 'old dominions' of the British Empire and was regarded as fully self governing from the 1920s. There were no international organisations, except the rather weak League of Nations at that time. As a result of the apartheid system South Africa was forced to leave the Commonwealth on the early 1960s but readmitted when that policy was dropped.

On 27 April 1994 South Africa officially became a multi party democracy and was ruled by a party that was elected by people of all races, colour or creed as opposed to apartheid where only 'the whites' as you call them were able to vote.
