Don't people understand that plastic surgery is a dangerous thing. Why is it encouraged in our society? Can't people simply be themselves without wanting to change a part of their body. Tell me why you have gotten plastic surgery and how you feel now that you have gotten it?

There are all kinds of reasons why people get plastic surgery. Some people do it for the wrong reasons, ie vanity, trying to impress others, to get more dates or better career prospects. And some people do it because they are insecure with their appearance, maybe they have been teased all their life about a particularly prominent feature and they would feel happier and more confident if they had surgery. There are those who have deeper issues, not just psychological issues but often an underlying mental condition such as body dysmorphic disorder, which leads them to seek out multiple surgeries in an attempt to fix perceived flaws in their appearance. People with BDD are rarely satisifed with the outcome as they often have such a distorted perception of what they truly look like, that they can't see any change after surgery and will continue to have more surgeries. There are those who want to try and reduce the signs of ageing, they want to look as fresh and young as possible, because how they feel on the outside doesn't reflect how they feel on the inside. And finally, some people are trying to fix their broken lives with plastic surgery, rather than looking at the reasons they are truly unhappy.

Many people have the mistaken belief that plastic surgery got its name because it involves the use of some sort of plastic or other manmade material, when in fact, the term plastic surgery comes from the Greek word "plastikos," which means to mold or to shape. By the way, the first published use of that word was by German surgeon Karl Ferdinand von Graefe (1787–1840), one of the pioneers of plastic surgery.

People get plastic surgury fir two main reasons. they do it to look good or if they get injured they get plastic surgery so they don't have scars. Most of the time the second reason is if you're injured on your face because people don't want to have a huge scar on their face. Also some people like to get their work on their face done by plastic surgeons so that it will have less scaring. The other reason is if people feel uncomfortable about the way they look surgery is an expensive way to change that but it's the most effective way, making more popular. People aslo do it because celeberties do it, and since people look up to celeberties they think that's what they should do too. I haven't ever had plastic sugery or thought about having it becuase I am mainly comfortable with my body and too young to do it. It seems like you are interested in plastic surgery. I would not recomend it. You should like your body the way it is and not try to be some1 else.

Some people are not happy with themselves!
My mother recently had a face lift at the age of 58 last year.. She has always been a very active and happy woman and even before the surgery people thought she was only in her late forties, early fifties not only because of her personality but because of her clear beautiful skin... but she did not look the way she felt, years have just been flying by and wrinkles were appearing around her eyes and her skin was no longer supple so she went ahead and had the face lift done... Nothing drastic, something natural and she now looks refreshed!
My best friend in the other hand, still in her middle twenties has had a boob job as well as lipo-sculpture with some fat relocated to her rear end to give her a 'Brazilian' look... In my opinion there was no need for those surgeries as she already looked fine with her body but i hate to say it but she is very vain and appearance is extremelyy important to her!

I haven't gotten plastic surgery, I'm just answering the first question...

Lots of people get plastic surgery to look like the models and actors/actresses that they see in the media. They want to look like them, they want to be beautiful.

Some people NEED plastic surgery because of a physical disability or a problem that can be fixed with plastic surgery.

It isn't encouraged, celebrities do it to look better then everyone else.... and other celebrities try to keep up. It's a vicious cycle that isn't going to stop anytime soon...

well, plastic surgery is purely aesthetic and we do live in a very superficial world.

But...
some are actually addicted to it - the surgery itself
some think that it would give them better self esteem
some just want it because everyone else is doing it
and some do it because you get to be on TV (extreme makeover) lol

I have never gotten plastic surgery, and don't ever plan on it. People are so concerned with the way they look because if you are not slim, with nice size breasts, and a cute face, then you are not considered beautiful, or sexy these days.
So, people go out and risk their life, and spend tons of money, on trying to make other people happy with them.
In my opinion, it's all a self esteem issue.
They want to be excepted by others, no matter what it takes.

If they need p-surgery due to an acident, that's ok, but a lot of them get it done to improve their appearance, but they don't think of the fact that as they grow older they will have to have the surgery repeated due to their faces or whatever sagging with age. As for it being dangerous, they need to watch "Nip Tuck" one time.

People are having a lack in confidence of the way they look. I think its encouraged in our society by all the celebrities doing it with their "perfect bodies." I haven't got plastic surgery and never will because i don't want to be sliced open. It scares me....
