Yes.
School hours are adequate to learn but not to practice/reinforce. Homework helps students review what they learnt as well as help involved parents understand what their child is learning. It also makes the child an active participant in his/her learning process rather than being a passive observer.
However, there is such a thing as too much homework, which can cause burn outs and create an environment which lacks time for healthy extra-curricular activities.
Key is moderation.

I just want to express my ridicule at comparing school to work by another poster (who wanted overtime - extra credit - for home work). While the analogy is flawed at many levels, a simple fact is you get paid to work, you (or your parents) pay to attend school. So, doing home work is basically maximizing your return on investment.

I am a mother with two teenagers. I don't think students should have homework everynight. They are in school all day and should have a little bit of free time. Most kids are involved in extra curricular activities. If students are to be well rounded and not work acholics starting at age 12 - how can that be if they always have work to do.
In this day and age kids can't relax b/c they are so used to doing 15 things at once. Keep school work in school and sports and break time for after school.
That's why people in their 30's never take vacation. They think they can do it all - just heart attacks waiting to happen.

If you only did work in school you could never acquire the required knowledge. In school, the teacher points the way and you follow up by research. Homework can be fun, if you make it so. Try studying with another student as well., in addition to your homework.

vs. What? Just coast thru 12 years and have no practical experience in managing life?
Homework teaches you more then just the subject. It teaches you goals and objectives, prioritizing your time, responsibity for your own fate, and a sense of accomplishment (or failure).
Learning how to deal with these while you are still in the relative shelter of home life gives you such an edge on life that you can not even begin to understand as a teenager.

Its good practice for whatever subject it is. Schools suppose to prepair you for your job after school. But, then you can argue that you don't have to bring your job home with you like you do school. But, I plan on becoming a Math teacher so I would say students should be required to do homework. That way they can learn it faster.

Of course. As a college student I know for a fact that the 50 minute/120 minute classes cover a lot of material. If it were not for homework a lot of that material is not absorbed.

I think that students should not be required to do homework,
b-cause that time is being taken out of our own time to do work that should be done at school. Then again they should, so they can get extra practice on the areas we do need help on.

yes, because it is basically a review to show that students understand what they are learning. I am still in school, and the homework shows that you are paying attention, and you get what your teacher is trying to say. Hope it helps!!!

Homework is practice, you cannot become good at anything without practice. Math is a subject you learn by doing, nobody learns math by watching it. If you want to become proficient at any sport, you must practice, same goes for academics.

Of course. The teacher is there to teach. You should not be in class just reading or doing problems. That is what you do at home.
