as a mother i didn't like the idea at first, but they relatively cheap and i don't have to fight with my kids about what they are trying to wear to school. It also prevents the kids from talking about what each other is wearing and creates a level playing field. we moved so they don't wear them now and i miss it.

When I was in school I would agree with most of the people here I would not have liked to wear a school unifrom. I do think as a parent now that schools are letting children wear to little clothing to school. I have no problem with them wearing it elsewhere but in school it should go back to skirts that touch the knees, and blouses that cover the body. For boys a nice shirt and pants. No tears no rips no glitter. It teaches us that sometime we may not like what we get in life and we have to conform with others opions. I think it is a good idea to make a regulation on what to wear to school not necessarily a uniform persay.

In some cases, they make sense. They de-emphasize outward appearance, so that students rich and poor look alike--no teasing of poor kids for wearing cheap clothes. They can give students a greater sense of identity with their school and increase school pride.
On the down side, uniforms discourage creativity in dress--but as long as students are able to be creative in other ways, this is not a big downer.

I personally think it is a good idea. Students aren't worried about what they wear. Parents don't need to spend a ton of money on clothes for their kids. Students have the same shirts on when they go on field trips. Girls don't come to school with short shorts/skirts. Some kids can even wear the same clothes for more than a year... I noticed that on free dress day at the school I student-teach at, students are more worried about getting their clothes dirty and they are constantly playing with their clothes....
Overall, it is cheaper and less of a hassle.

My thought on this issue is that it is actually a good thing to have them. Parents and children don't have to "think" about what they are going to wear to school the next day. It cuts out some of the social stigma concentrated towards poor people. It also allows kids to focus on school work instead of the new look that "Tiffany" is sporting. The only downside I see is that it does curtail some of the individualism that kids need to set while they are in their youth.

I went to private school from k-12, and we always had uniforms. I loved them because you didn't have to ponder what the wear in the mornings..
I wish we had work uniforms. Maybe then I wouldn't be late every day.

For us parents, it makes things easier. There are no fights over what is appropriate to wear to school. There are also no peer pressures to wear a certain label or designer. My daughter and her schoolmates don't seem to mind them, either.
For those who say we are restricting creativity, I would say that is not true. My daughter and her friends all wear the latest fashions after school, and on the weekends. Fashion statements can still be made, and individualism is encouraged, just not at school.

I'm all for them.
I was the poor kid in the affluent schools that couldn't afford the latest fashions. Kids bullied me because my jeans weren't made by Jordash or Calvin Clien.
I think school uniform are a great equalizer.

I had to wear them all through school. They were not fun but you got used to them. THey are cheaper for the parents and take alopt of pressure off the kids to not have to look a certain way to be cool. Not a bad idea and they do seem to help

Depends what they are. I am in sixth-form and have to wear a suit unlike all other sixth-forms in my area but I like it because it gives us some sort of authority over the lower years.
