While some students do not show their true knowledge of a subject on an exam, there is still no better way to measure what the student has learned. If you can come up with a better, viable way, you can revolutionize education. Now there's something to work toward.

A substitute is not yet found or there is no substitute for examination to give rankings so that the student can apply for Medical, engineering, any degree,or any professional courses. This is an age old practise. Simply because examination is not the best indicator of ones performance this whole idea can't be scraped out. That's why to improve ones performance examination is must. This can be done up to 6Th standard, I mean No exams. up to 6ht std. That can be done but don't have the idea of easy study unlike easy money. Work hard. Then this question may not arise in you.

As a student I am not really crazy about exams either, but as a teacher I use them when I need to know if I am doing my job and if my class is learning.

The type of exam is really what you dislike isn't it? Sometimes students can know the subject backwards and forwards but are unable to put it down on paper. For those students I give oral exams. I like these best because I can see how the thought process is working in the student. But of course not every exam can be done this way and we must all take an exam sometime in our lives to see how much we know. Would you give a driver's license to someone who told you they knew how to drive without giving them an exam?

You are correct only to some extent. Exams may not always be an indication of good perfomance in real life. But it surely judges a person's integrity towards any sort of committment.

Some people hate exams, could know every word in a text book but when it comes to a test , choke. However, exams are needed for the educator to determine whether or not you have learned anything, whether you get an A or a C, they need some type of guideline, as do you to see what your weak areas are so that you can build up those areas.

I agree with you. I am now in college, but I was never great at exams. I think it was from a anxiety problem. Talk to your teacher and see if there may be things they can help you with while taking tests (sometimes they can put you in a secluded spot or play music during the exam.) I have even asked a professor about that and they allowed me to do a essay exam rather than a written exam. I am good with speeches and essays, but not regular exams. Talk to your teacher about it.

Suppose you come to me and want a job as a carpenter. Do you think I'm going to agree to hire you without proof you know how to do the job? So you hand me your certificate showing me you're a journeyman carpenter. Hey: you had to take an exam to earn that certificate!

Or you want a job as a bank teller. Guess what: ain't gonna happen without a test proving your competence in handling numbers.

Or you want to join the Army. Got news for ya - you ain't getting in without taking a long, very detailed written test first!

Dang! Guess life is full of exams and tests, isn't it? So do your homework and do your classwork and you'll have no trouble with the exams. (Doh!)

for some it is not a true indication of learning, but there has to be a way to find out if the material was learned or not.

I agree, but what would you substitute in its place. What would prevent someone for going to a university for four years, or medical school or law school and without studying demand a degree?
