Say you had money to spare (not millions; just a decent amount), what business would you start? Why? Why do you think this business would succeed?

A bookstore. It's my dream.

I think it would succeed, because there are no bookstores within 5 miles of my area...and a lot of people like to read.

I would start a learning centre (similar to Sylvan) in my area...where kids can have one on one tutoring in a safe, clean, respectable place.

Why?
Because education is up on the list of good things in life to have, just after health.
Our teachers don't have enough time to give the much needed attention to each student. Some kids need to be taught in a manner they understand...not everyone learns the same way. Would be a shame to let some smart (in a different way) students go through school without fully understanding lessons.

I think it would succeed because the world is a competitive place and the more education you have the more choices you have...and the doors of opportunity would open more readily. Parents (& some kids) would recognize this and want the extra help.
That's what I think anyhow.

I am sorry I do not agree with you are any of those that have answered your question. It would be far easier to open a small business in the Philippines an be able to support your family than working for someone else. The Philippines is ripe for Mom and Pop store just like the U.S. was in the fifties. I have GIVEN not loaned a young couple to open a small chicken restaurant. They have now been open for two years, paying themselves each 300 pesos a day and averaging about 28,000 pesos profit at the end of the month. They have been able to purchase a small house and a motorcycle. I have GIVEN a young man the money to buy a stainless steel cart to sell fish soup. He has had it now for about 1 1/2 years and is able to take about 300 pesos a day out of it. He has a THIRD grade education. I have Given two Muslim ladies (sisters) the money to open a sari-sari store and they are able to generate about about 500 pesos a day for their family and they have no formal education. I have only had one couple fail and they fail because they did not try hard enough and would not listen to advise. I have provided scholarships for nine students and they all have finished college and all had very difficult times getting jobs. Six of the nine had to go abroad to work and none are working the the fields they got a degree in. Three are working for Call Centers in Davao. To be successful in a small business is more about perseverance than education. It is more about common sense than book sense. I also do not know why you assume Filipino people are stupid. It is not common for foreigners to lose their money in business ventures because few foreigners are willing to do it. Most foreigners living here are retired and not interested in business ventures with Filipinos. I would also venture to say that most foreigners have heard people tell stories just like you told. Your immediate family escaped to the U.S. and made it big. If they would have had to stay in the Philippines you might be asking a relative visiting from the State for help and you certainly would not be acting so arrogant as you are now. You are also wrong about the Philippine economy. The problem in the Philippines is lack of jobs, corruption, lack of infra-structure, bad laws pertaining to foreign ownership of corporations and land, but the country is ripe for economic grow. They have exceeded World Bank growth estimates for the last two years. I admire them for asking. If they did not ask they would never have a chance. They obvious are more ambitious than you are because it sounds as if you would not even bother or try to ask.

I'd start a place where kids could hang out. We live in a very small town and during the winter there is not much to do, so I'd open a place that had bowling, roller skating, arcade games, food, stuff like that.

If I could, I think I'd see about getting a Saturn franchise going, because there are no dealers in my corner of the state - the nearest ones are a couple hours away. I think people would buy Saturns if there was a dealership in my area.
