I was considering going to Cuba (leaving from Mexico).

What can I expect?

And Yes, I am aware of the legal issues, so please don't chastise me...

To MMUSCS: The laws were made because Cuba wouldn't do what the US wanted them to. As for obeying laws, I assume you have never driven over the speed limit, gone thru a red light, had a beer then driven home or crossed when the saignage told you not to because if you did, then you broke the law! Do you think the laws are made just for you? How rude of you!

I absolutely LOVE Cuba.. have been there 8 times! I just got back from Mexico (only went there because my daughter's passport had expired so we couldn't do Cuba) and although to be honest the food in Cuba really isn't comparable I much prefer it there! There is more to a vacation than stuffing your face after all! For the most part the tours are inexpensive.. if you are going to Varadero you really must do the catamaran tour that includes swimming with the dolphins! Don't bother renting a car.. taxis are dirt cheap. Make sure you eat a lobster for me.. they are big spiny Atlantic lobsters and very very cheap! Massages are available in most hotels and on the beach for about $15.. what a deal! Don't take American Express traveller's cheques.. you can't use them or a US based credit card. Get Thomas Cook in a currency OTHER than US dollars as there is a surcharge on them. Take Canadian dollars or Euros. And take a bunch of inexpensive giveaways for tips. The staff certainly appreciate money but there's not a whole lot of stuff for them to buy. Things like pantihose and nail polish remover and good quality deodorant go over well, and take a great big stainless steel thermal mug! Great to keep your beer cold and the sand out of it when on the beach and you just can't buy a thermal MUG in Cuba. Thermoses yes but not mugs, and giving it as a farewell gift to your favourite Cuban will thrill them. Last trip I brought extra for giveaways, and one year I traded my mug for a massage :)

US citizens can travel to Cuba. Shouldnt be a problem for tourism purposes. There are no flights to Cuba from any part of the United States. You must make your way to Canada or Mexico first in order to get to Cuba.

You can be fined even if they don't stamp your passport. Your lack of regard for laws is amazing. Are they made for everyone but you?
You are the one breaking a Federal Law... are you ready to have your PP revoked and have OFAC send you a bill for over $10,000? You may think I am rude, but you are the one that thinks you can do what you want. And to answer your question.. no, I don't intentionally..drive over the speed limit or run red lights, but I am guessing you do.
You are wanting to do something you know is illegal........ and you call me rude. I would call you criminal.

Its an interesting place. Lots of history, great colonial buildings. It's the only Communist country I've been to so that was a little different. I remember propaganda style billboards proclaiming Socialismo Si! & Che Guevara is everywhere & on everything.
It's not my favourite place but I do think it's worth seeing. They generally don't stamp passports anymore - the usual practice is to stamp a piece of paper and slip that into your passport.

My friend has been to Cuba, be careful it's beautiful but can be dangerous. And if you are a US citizen make sure you don't have your passport stamped or you wil be fined. Have fun and good luck.

Make sure you do everything you can to stay safe while you there dont take too much with you you can buy most anything you need there real cheap.
Take and extra suitcase with you for what you buy.
And enjoy yourself.
Dont try to bring contraband back with you it could land you in jail.
