Well, I know Homer was a "pen name" if you can call it that in the oral tradition. Most Biblical scholars believe that there were at least three "Isaiah"s, and likely at least two of them weren't called Isaiah. I wonder where people are getting the Mark Twain answer from? Off the top of my head, the Brontes and George Eliot used male pen names before he did.

Mark Twain was definitely NOT the first. There are many ancient poets, sculptors, artists, etc. to use pen names in their works.

No, I think it was Benjamin Franklin. He signed some of his documents for his newspaper as that of an old woman.
