When a gold rush starts, many people join in the lure of easy wealth. As more prospectors mine an area, the "easy to find" gold is quickly found and as the effort begins to exceed the reward, many go on about a different living. .
This same set of events occurs during any venture which offers quick and easy reward.
It's important to note that many more people became wealthy catering to the miner's needs than became wealthy by prospecting.

All the easy places to hunt gold had been picked over. The mother load was never found and the Calif. waters have renewed the deposits down stream now but back then the gold had been mostly picked up.

There's still gold in "them thar hills"--but it became more expensive commercially to mine deeper than it was worth on the market! A tourist can still pan for gold and get a bit of gold dust if you work hard enough!
