Absolutely fantastic shame Clavell died having written so few books but try Clavell's Tai-Pan if you liked Shogun its got the same intricate plots, great locations and spin on historical events.
If you don't like the intrigue of merchants and prefer courtisans his Gai-Jin is also heavily Japanese.

I also recommend Wilbur Smiith's Courtney books Monsoon, Blue Horizon, and Birds of Prey.

Yes. A great read. I first started reading James Clavell's books when living in Hong Kong and I enjoyed Taipan and Noble House so much that I decided to read Shogun. I can recommend Whirlwind, which is set in Iran in 1979 - it has some references back to Noble House, but these are 'by the way' to the story line. I'm from the UK but now live in Switzerland.

I read it some years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.It was an extremely well structured plot and the narrative read as though it must have been well researched. I feel, though, that the closing stages of the book were a massive anti climax and had not been thought through too thoroughly by the author,Clavell. It felt to me that he had somehow lost interest in the plot and just wanted to get it finished.

Absolutely loved it - wanted it to never end. Decided to read other books by James Clavell, but nothing else came close. Disliked Tai-pan and Noble House - I never bothered to finish Noble House. Shogun was definitely his masterpiece.

I read the book many times in the 80's and was addicted to it. my wife threw it at me once so I put it away and haven't read it since. however I discovered that it was basically a load of rubbish as far as being historically correct, although there was once a British navigator who lived in Japan for many years.

I read it some months ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it, although I was highly disappointed that you-know-who didn't make it through. She was definatly my favorite character. (Sorry. I don't wish to spoil it for others!)
