We were also wanting to visit Galveston and ride in the car on the barge. Any advise from anyone that has been to this area?

The best time of year is spring or fall because the weather is mild. Stay during the week so you can avoid the srushing weekend crowds in Kemah. The Boardwalk Inn is pricey, but with your family, it will be convenient to stay right on the boardwalk. There quite a few bed and breakfasts around too. Kemah offers a ride on a powerboat and there is a private boat tour on a pirate ship.
Galveston won't be crowded unless you go at Spring Break. The ferry will be a long wait but you can park the car and walk on to avoid all the traffic. The trip only takes a few minutes, but you will probably see some porpoises. Sometimes you can get a tour of the captain's steering room. Take a ride around town on the ferry. Go to Moody Gardens for Imax and tropical sights. Stay in a hotel on the seawall (San Louis) or on the strand, where you'll find lots to do.

Kemah is great. They have some very nice restaurants to eat and enjoy watching the boats come in off the bay. They also have a few amusement rides. WHile there go to the aquarium the kids will love it. My only suggestion is when riding the ferry at Galveston do not take your car on it. Rather park your car and walk on this way you can stay on the boat ride it over then back. Stand on the upper observation deck and keep a watch out for dolphins. The last time I took my kids we saw several pods of them and they put on a good show.

Kemah will be alot of fun for your kids, there are some amusement rides and a train ride through the restaurant area that's fun for the little ones. There is also arcade games for them to play, my kids like going and playing the games. One thing you definitely need to do is the Stingray Reef, you get to go in and pet and feed the stingrays, they will come right to you to get the food.(really cool). Galveston is not that bad, if you have never seen the ocean or bay its pretty cool, if you have its okay. You can go to the Strand area and do some shopping, near the Strand is the tall ship Elissa and some restaurants. Visit the web sites and have fun.

make sure you take some money with you to kemah. Eat at the aquarium or JOE's CRAB shack. it is really kid freindly. on saturdays they have free baloons and face painting. the kids menus are interactive and pretty cheap. they have an arcade and a mini theme park on the boardwalk. make sure to play the gues your age or wieght game for an easy free gift.

the catfish feeding area behind the "flying dutchman" restaurant is something kids like.

Also, once you go with the kids once, the next time leave 'em with the in-laws for the romantic experience. Stay at the boardwalk inn if you can afford it.

hope this helps.

dont eat at the aquarium.the thunderstorm noises and the mechanical gorillas will probably scare your younger kids.also their food is overpriced and nasty.they also give you small portions.
