The start codon for transLATION is AUG

The start of transcription is thought to occur down stream of the TATA box which is a part of the minimal promoter sequence. Other transcriptional promoter elements can be found around this region and as far as a few Kb upstream of the minimal promoter. The promoter region is where transcriptional machinery assembles.

Transcription can start not only from AUG. but also from (less frequently) TTG and GTG.
