Are laptops supposed to be mainly for travel ,or is it ok to rely solely on a laptop for the home computer?Ever since my PC broke down I've been using my laptop as my primary computer.I never take it off my home desk.It stays there just like a desk top PC.I rarely even close the top down. When Im done I just shut it off and leave it open.
Is this detremental,or harmful to the shelf life etc.?Is this appropriate ussage or should I have to purchase a PC?If so,What are the advantages to owning a PC v.s a laptop?

Just be sure to disconnect it and let it rely on battery power at least once or twice a month to keep the battery working properly. Other than that, it's perfectly fine. everything works the same as it would on the desktop, it's just that battery that would need special consideration.

The only true advantages of owning a desktop over a laptop is that you will have expandability, and it's easy to get to the guts of a computer if you want to upgrade, and parts are much cheaper.

But if you need mobility, and don't plan on doing any upgrading or serious computing like gaming, then a laptop would be perfect.

If you are happy with the set up, it's perfectly ok. There's nothing written stating a laptop must be used for travel, although that was the obvious idea behind them. Many people use a laptop as their primary system.

However, there are advantages to having a PC versus a laptop in a situation like yours. For one, desktops are less expensive usually. They also don't suffer from heat issues as much, and there's no battery to worry about. The keyboards are generally easier to use, and a regular mouse is much easier than a touchpad or trackball for most people.

There are also a few disadvantages to a desktop PC. In the case of a power failure, without a battery backup, a desktop would shut off, potentially causing damage. Desktops have a lot of cables to contend with, especially if you need to move the computer elsewhere. Also, with a laptop, if you do need to take it somewhere else, it's as simple as closing the lid, unplugging the power, and you're ready to go. Desktops are the exact opposite of portable.

Are you kidding me with this??? You can absolutly NOT use a lap top as a normal desktop PC. What, do you think that a lap top is designed to be used at times other than during travel??? That is what they are built to dom and that is what they are for!!!

It is fine to use a lap top as your only computer. Though when you are not usin it you should close it, this will keep dust out of the keyboard, and help protect the screen. Also, if you keep it plugged in at all times, you should unplug it and run off battery power only from time to time, otherwise the battery will wear out and not be there when you do actually need to travel with it.

I use my laptop for all my computer needs, and it's just as powerful as a desktop. The only drawback is if you're using it for gaming. Most laptops have mobile processors with integrated graphics, and that's not good for high end games that require things like T&L. However, if you're not into gaming, laptops are perfectly fine. It is not recommended that you keep it turned on all the time, though. Laptops tend to get hot, unless you have good ventilation.

I have a desktop and a laptop but I use the laptop mostly just because it is faster. Using it on a daily basis shouldn't harm the computer I use mine everyday and hasn't hurt it yet. I have had this laptop for about 3 years now.

There is no answer what is better or worse. Very much depends on what you use it for. I am a graphic designer and I use a PowerBook G4 for a lot of my work. It's been treating me great through college and a year of professsional work (knock on wood).

Note: if you decide to stay with the laptop, buy yourself an external hard drive in addition to the laptop to store and keep your laptop har drive clean.

Many people are opting to purchase a LapTop as opposed to a traditional desktop with traveling and such. I have friend's that do the same thing you do and they have no problems with their LapTop.
