i think there's no doubt television and mainstream radio are partly to blame for dumbing down in society.
information is presented in bite sized easy to digest and easy to understand chunks, in many cases removing the requirement to actually think about anything.
previously people would get their information from reading a newspaper, or glean knowledge and entertainment from reading a book ... both of which expand your vocabulary and enhance your understanding and ability to use language.
it maybe hasn't directly decreased the intelligence of a given individual, but over society as a whole i think we'd be a whole lot smarter if it wasn't for the goggle box.
sure, there's a lot of intelligent, though provoking television, but for every good news program, documentary, or art house movie there's also american idol, changing rooms, x factor, and pimp my ride (where the sum vocabulary is "daaaaaaaaamn", "das what i'm talking about", "you know what ahm sayin'", "man dat is whack", and "yeeeeeeeeeeeeah")

I certainly do not think so. I myself have gained greater knowledge of many things by watching just about any show you can think of. I have learned a great deal about American history and World history just by watching the Discovery channel and History channel. Don't think it is only the top knotch educational shows that come on, but even growing up as a child and watching the Rugrats, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, or even Kim Possible. Yes, they taught us a lot about life and friendships, but they even give you more knowledge you can use in school as well. For instance, on The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, not everything you see and hear is true, but you still gain some scientific knowledge of how things work. Even more popular shows like that on MTV, MTV2, BET, and VH1 give good, knowledgible information on cultures, music, and life. Face it, not all T.V. is bad.
However, I do agree that many still use it to a disadvantage in life. Some may not incorperate what they see into useful information and so they do lose some great chances to succed in school or life.
I may sound like someone in their late twentys or early thirtys, but I am only a junior in high school and I am only seventeen years old. This just proves that there is still hope for a smarter future and that television helps increase that intelegence. What more could you ask for?

I don't really believe that television has decreased our intelligence, but I do think that the next generation has loss their drive to succeed due to the fact that things are becoming easier and they no longer need to know how to spell or read. We can blame our stupidity on other things all we want, but when it comes down to it, it's our own responsibility and desires.

The intelligence of trhe properly-known american is lowering i think of by using fact the way of existence is way less and much less complicated (strategies clever). confident you have have been given college. yet have you ever considered the try papers? they are getting extra basic by using fact anybody is getting lazier. human beings have invented machines like computers that require you to click a button and get all the innovations you may routinely could study and picture approximately. anybody is in basic terms required to think of much less and much less in in the present day's international. i won't be in a position to think of of the outcomes further than somebody needs to awaken quickly and alter the way american's stay. The wolrd is turning out to be extra westernised so if the Amiericans exchange the international will progressively exchange besides. yet i'm undecided they are going to save on with usa.

Just like the books and internet the TV can also be used for both ways... I beleive that TV is usually watched to have fun, not to learn somethings... So it does decrease our intelligence...

No. I think it makes us less talented though. People used to write, read, build, and just basically stay busy. Without TV people are more likely to do productive things. I don't think it's made us less intelligent though.

Compare the number of TV channels with educational programs (i.e. PBS, History, A&E) to the number of TV channels with those mind-numbing, s(h)it-coms and other programs guaranteed to "dumb down"(i.e. American Idol, Funniest Videos, Las Vegas).
You will find your answer after you "do the math", so to speak.

I don't think so. . .the television has allowed us to see things never seen before (for example the rain forest, the pyramids) by our great-grandparents. Instead of hearing stories, we can see everything. . .
