People are against it but they don't feel that strongly about it.
It's not going to determine who forms the next government, and the politicians know that. There only worried about opposition to things that starts riots or puts people on the streets.

It is obvious from outside the UK that the UK has not been a democracy for some time now. The basic rights found in a democracy; freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom to defend oneself or ones family, freedom of economic pursuits, freedom of religion (ALL religions, including Christianity) have been gone from the scene there for years.
It is sad that the nation in which the first glimmerings of democratic government appeared hundreds of years ago, has degenerated into a softly totalitarian nanny-state.
I believe it was Ben Franklin, or somebody of that type who said "the people who would give up freedom for security deserve neither". I fear that we are on the same path in my country, however.

I you don't like it, vote Tory.
To the person above, how can you say you have a democracy in the US if your president won the 2000 & 2004 elections with less votes than his rivals and its been proven that results in some states were rigged.
Dr Schmoo: Having the freedom to polute the environment, carry guns and express extreme religious views is not a good thing.

there is no democracy anywhere Im in Canada where were supposed to have a model democracy well in my opinion we have and you have an elected dictator. There is no democracy... no freedom of speech ... and the government just does what they feel like in general I find. It sucks cause most wars are not wars the people want they are wars the government wants.

The Democracy we have is a fudge of systems that mimic the ideal. So in other words no, we dont have a democracy.

We don't live in a real Democracy and I have never kidded myself that we did. We live in the Peoples Democratic Republic of Britain, and what a thoroughly unpleasant place it is.
