My house is about 50 feet from train tracks & trains going by cause shaking (feels similar to a small earthquake). Could this cause structural damage to the house? If so how long could it take for damage to occur? *note: the house is 30 yrs old and the house inspector found nothing wrong with the foundation. Thank you in advance for your help!

I would be concerned. It could be that the tracks were there when your house was built and the builders kept that in mind when designing your house. But I would watch for cracks on your walls and ceiling. And check your foundation at least once a year to make sure it is still sound. Repeated shaking like that will eventually compromise the structure. So keep an eye on it and don't get behind on repairs.

My parents home was 75 feet from active tracks. It is over 100 years old. Tracks were there first. The foundation is solid, though I suspect this foundation is more solid than one made only 30 years ago?

There is some cracking in the Lathe & Plaster, but I've seen that in almost every L&P home regardless of being near trains.

Probably more apt to have dishes break when they are on edge for display purposes than home problems. Same for my grandmothers house. Only 20 feet from a major roadway with fully loaded trucks. Structural elements are still sound. Some cracking in Lathe and Plaster, which in my observation is more relating to settling and a new roof than anything else.

I think as long as you house is well built, and the inspector kind of confirmed that, you don't need to fret this one.

The vibrations will speed up the natural settling of the landscape but so long as your house is reasonably well built, it will be fine. If it is right next to a well used track...you might want to secure items that could fall from shelves as the constant vibrations could eventually cause them to topple.
