I use to write songs when I was depressed. Now I'm happy, have a loving gf, take good care of myself, and I seem to struggle with writing. Maybe it's because I'm forcing myself to write? I'm not really sure. What can I do to get inspiration again? My friend is heavily depressed now and seems to be writing alot. Do you have to be in a bad mood to be productive when it comes to song writing or what? Do I need drugs?I'm totally clean..I don't drink or smoke. I use to though..and I know if my addictive personality is just using this as an excuse to go back or what. Please give me some answers if ya can...gotta go exercise now.

You don't have to be depressed in to write well. Why not focus on the postive turn you life has taken. Think about the things you have been able to accomplish now that you are clean and sober. Find inspiration in your new relationship and life. This new leaf you've turned over is in itself worthing of writing about.

If depression is your inspiration, think about how depressed you would be if your happiness went away. Think about all the things that would happen if you life suddenly went down hill. It's an odd thing to do, but if it work, it works.

Play a loop(dj term) of strong rhythm and start humming. Then a catch phrase like "Tell me I sound like crap" and things just roll. Like..."and tell me my friends are crap"or even better,"I'm shouting cause I can not rap."

Why not write about the process of straightening out your life...the new thoughts you are experiencing. The 'then' and 'now'...
