to everyone here who said it is because the govt. can't easily tax it or that people can grow their own, you are completely mistaken!! you can legally grow your own tobacco but nobody does because its so much easier to simply buy a pack of cigarettes. it would be the same if you could buy a pack of joints.

The reason it is kept illegal is because of the law enforcement, tobacco, alcohol and cotton lobbies see its legalization as a threat to their prospective incomes. The cotton industry doesn't want it because hemp fiber is superior in every way to cotton fiber, law enforcement does want it legalized because that would reduce the power they have to seize property. The alcohol and tobacco industries don't want it legalized because it might cut into their sales. I didn't even mention the right wing conservatives, they don't want it because they hate the fact that any people can enjoy getting pleasure from any source other than by their strict straight and narrow.

I believe someday it will be legalized and that will be a good day.

Because they already have a "drug" that should be illegal...but it's not...cigarettes....and they make money from it in taxes!...AND marijuana does cause harm...problems with memory/learning, distorted perception/false sense of happiness, loss cordination, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, increased heart rate, anxiety...marijuana contains over 400 chemicals, and when smoked contains the same cancer causing agents as cigarettes...not to mention the added chemicals such as embalming fluid and others the local corner drug dealer adds in to keep customers coming...just to name a few facts, i'm sure there is more!

Its all about the money. The government will not legalize something that will be difficult to tax. Its on the streets soo heavily that they would never be able to regulate it. Why make it legal when they are making so much money on the fines people have to pay for having it in their possession.

It's not an opinion but a fact.

They have found a way to make a cleaner burning fuel from marijuana and the oil companies are putting a lot of money into elections to make sure that it doesn't become legal. To do so would kill the oil company's profits and it would drop big time.

Existing Marijuana laws are now fully supporting over a million law enforcement officials, judges, and attornies for both the prosecution and defense. It is now from that standpoint the biggest revenue source in the U.S.
Do the math... would you reverse it if you were a legislator?

because marijuana is a natural drug, and phizer cannot get rich off of it..
it'd make a good cash crop, however the money the govt seizes from drug runners is far more then the tax revenues they'd realize in legalizing it. It's really a matter of economics, they (the govt) make more money off keeping the drug illegal, then legalizing it.

Did you know that the movie "Reefer Madness" was actually financed by 3M (yes the company that brings you post-it notes), b/c HEMP (which is derived from the same plant as Marijuana) was seen as a threat to the economic survivability of 3M's competing product (Nylon) for rope construction.

It's really just a matter of economics..

The government wont legalize it because there is to much money to be made from fines and locking people up for it.If they legalize it and tax it everyone would sell it under the table and no tax would be collected. Also if they legalize it then they would have to forgive all the fines they collected from it in the past.

It is certainly much less harmful than alcohol and 100 times less harmful than cigarettes. It is a revenue thing. The govt cannot figure out a way to tax it because people could easily grow their own and this would hurt the tobacco and alcohol companies. It is a money-greed thing. A very sad chapter in American history.

Wrong my friend. If it does no harm why do people go to rehab when they get addicted to it? (Oh, and don't use the 'alcohol is legal' ananlogy. Alcohol is the last legal drug).
Long term use of marijuana can result in chromosome damage which can be passed through to your children and grandchildren and cause birth defects. So, that is why it should not be lega.

I dunno I guess it would undermine their whole war on drugs thing. Personally I think it should be a personal choice that is only harming oneself, like drinking alcohol. I once read about this weird conspiracy sort of thing, I guess a long time ago they found a way to make paper out of hemp and the paper companies got mad and it was made illegal soon afterwards...hmm...
