You are working on a 24 hour clock. take the first 12 hours of the day and subtract from the 20:45 and you have 8.45. Since you have more than 12 hours, you are past noon so - 20:45 is 20:45 minus 12 = 8:45 pm.

8:45 pm

This is also known as military time. The hours in the morning up to noon are just like regular time, then after that it becomes 13:00 for 1:00, etc. All you have to do is subtract 12 from the time. Anything after 12:00 is afternoon, anything before is morning. This helps eliminate confusion in critical situations. You don't have to wonder if 8:00 is am or pm - it's either 8:00 or 20:00.
