The Thousand and One Arabian Nights is a very complex tale. Not everyone agrees, first of all, exactly which tales should be included/excluded. Not all of the tales are necessarily Arabian or even Eastern. Anyway, the basic idea is this: A Queen sleeps with her slave instead of sleeping with her husband, the King. When the King discovers that, he executes the Queen and decides to marry and execute one woman every day and execute her the next day. Then he marries a woman called Scheherzade. She doesn't want to be executed. So, she tells him a long story that goes on most of the night. Just before sunrise, she starts another one. So, he doesn't execute her. He wants to hear the next one. And this process goes on for 1001 nights, at which point the King decides that even if she IS unfaithful to him later, she is too good a story-teller to kill, so he stays married to her and does not execute her.
