Most newer laptops have a Mic built-in in addition to speakers. My Acer laptop has both, as do most other big brand names.
To communicate for free, try using Skype from www.skype.com. You will need a headset and Mic at your Desktop PC to talk to him "PC to PC". I like the Logitech USB 250 Headset & Mic (I paid $20 Canadian last week).
Skype uses "Voice over Internet Protocol" (VoIP), also called "Internet Telephony", to communicate over the web. No need to call a regular phone and pay through the nose for long distance.

Most laptops and computers that are on the market now have that feature. Just mention to the sales person that you would want to be able to plug in a headset.

You would need an application like Skype or Yahoo Messenger which offer PC to PC calling for free (basically just a chat server like Ventrillo or Team Speak) and they offer subscription services to send and recieve calls from land lines. That's what you'd probably want.
However, you're going to want a laptop that has a wireless card... it's not nessasary, but it would be much better for communication purposes.

hi
this is not really an exclusive feature as any laptop can be used for this as long as u have internet connectivity. u can connect thru a phone line using the built in modem, u can use wi-fi to access internet if the laptop is wi-fi capable, and u can also use a direct lan connection by plugging in the lan cable into the ethernet port.
U will also need some software which actually gives u the facility. it can be yahoo messenger, or any other voice chat program and every laptop has a input and output jack for sound so just plug in and off u go!!!!.
Buy one with the core duo, if u are not averse to it, AMD powered laptop wud be better in my opinion.
Ciao

Get this:
http://www.apple.com/macbook/macbook.html
and the free download of this for video chatting:
http://www.skype.com/
If you get 2 Macs, one for you and one for him, you can both use the built in iChat, which is the best video chatting software around.
