If you have had a bowl of fresh sweet cherries you would know not to bite into them directly because you would find a 'pit' or as it is called on a cherry a drupe. Therefore you must eat these sweet treats very carefully so you do not harm your teeth.
Such is life. Life is sweet and often goes along great and then there is that stone that you stub your toe on. You didn't see it but you did know that it was going to come along sometime. So you enjoy life while it is good and try very hard not to stub your toe on the stone. You eat the cherries enjoying the sweet fruit but you know there is a seed that you much watch out for.
So enjoy life to its fullest but be aware of the "pits". :-)

bowl of cherries, life is just a
These are happy circumstances; life is wonderful. This phrase is often used ironically, as in My husband is about to get laid off--life is just a bowl of cherries, right? Originating as the title of a song (1931) by Lew Brown (lyrics) and composer Ray Henderson, this term expressed the idea that everything was going very well. However, its ironical use was established by the 1970s.
