Hi!
Ok..first..there is no such thing as a free domain. So-called free domains come with strings. You will regret getting into one of these deals. Best bet is to go ahead and buy a domain and then worry about where you're going to host it.

I still recommend:

http://www.godaddy.com

Yes..go ahead and pay the ~$8.00 for it..and then be done with.
I have a few with 1 and 1..but regret it...and will transfer them (surprise!) To godaddy two months before I'm suppose to be billed for them again.

Go ahead and pay for more than one year, too. It will help you with Google ranking..just the simple fact you have more than one year paid on it.

Firstly be sure that you dont get anything for free.

You will need to purchase Domain Name & Web Hosting to get your site running.

You can purchase it for cheap rates. You may visit www.space4domain.com to get a good quote.

I don't know if there are any free domain name service out there. For example, "www.yourdomain.com" you can get something like " www.geocities.com/yourname". If you are interested in that, go to geocities.com and signup.
