Once you decide that you want to change for the better, the journey has begun. It's not so much a matter of trying to be something, but of not trying to be something. We tend to be the sum of our experiences. So you may have picked up lots of bad stuff along the way. (Welcome to the club) The key is catching yourself doing or being something that you'd rather not. The part of you that sees this, the objective you, can step aside and move in a different way. It's a process of outgrowing your old self and coming alive in a new way. Sometimes it's a few steps forward, a couple back, but the real key is persistence. Don't beat yourself up, be patient and forgiving with yourself and look for ways to overcome objectively.
Learning good things from others by emulations is a good way to change for the better too. Be open.

Am telling you the truth, I too don't know myself well at all. In fact, I surprise myself a lot of times which has made me less sociable.
I've figured something out. Imagine that you are on a certain level of coolness, good-naturedness or anything like that. Just to stay on that level, you must aim for something higher. If you don't want to go any further, then you'll find that just remaining on that level becomes a challenge! Then you'll fall. This happens specially in professional sports where you've got to improve to win.
Look, there's a certain difference in being yourself and not improving. eg. if you meet someone after a few years, he may have changed in some ways, he may have achieved a higher rank but he is the same kind, gentle person for you.
If you're not yourself, it means that you're acting and in some situations, you won't know how to react, in your natural way or in the way veiled by the mask.
Once you grow older, you don't have to improve, then you can be yourself naturally and effortlessly. But as a kid, you must strive for perfection.
Don't try to copy yourself, set an example so that others may want to copy you and then tell them to be their own self. Otherwise, the world would just stagnate and eventually decay.
Well, I'm just a ninth standard student, I may have got a bit carried away while writing this, so forgive me for any foolishness cause I'm no one to comment on these high things.
Good Luck!

The aim of life is to be happy healthy and to remain connected to the source of life.If you understand that you are not mind(which deals only with information of time the experiances you had from your past till now and based on that you think of future) so the mind keeps on withdrawing you to its experiances which the mind likes . Further you are not body as it is made of material which will decay keeps demanding from you the material like food clothes shelter and vanities of the world .
TO IMPROVE YOURSELF YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE.YOU ARE A SOUL .
THE OUTER EXPRESSION OF THE SOUL IS YOUR ATTENTION . WHERE EVER THE ATTENTION GOES THE ENERGY FLOWS. The mind and body are using the attention like a donkey day in and day out . INSTED the attention should use mind and body to become master of all and jack of non and to develop the capabilities to face things as they come in life.
BECAUSE ATTENTION IS INTELLIGENCE AND IS PART OF ABSOLUTE INTELLIGENCE AND A CAPABLE FORCE THE GOD FULL OF LOVE COMPASSION AND MERCY. I hope this answers you question. Regards chand

well, if you can't change yourself then life doesn't have any hope, does it? If you have hope for your future and in your ability to be happy then you must find whatever is inside you that facilitates that process.
good luck!
