I was in a mediocre fender bender (woman cut me off in traffic and I rear ended her) and since she was in an SUV, they say its "normal" that the airbags didn't deploy. I ended up with a cracked sternum and 2 broken ribs. I understand air bags not being as sensitive anymore, but still, good grief you would have thought something would have happened.

All depends where the airbag deploying sensor is on your frontal structure. If you nipped her with lets say the front corner of your vehicle, the rear towing ball of her SUV, then chances are it wasn't s a spread out force that would allow the airbag to pop.

Also, most airbags won't deploy at low speeds under 15MPH. I mean, you could be driving 40MPH, slam the brakes and your sliding into someone and by the time you hit them you could have hit at 10MPH because of deceleration and in that case it will pop because it takes THAT into account... But if it's just stop and go slow traffic, it might not. But if your whole bumper is pushed inward, then I find it unusual it didn't deploy.

Your lucky though, in my city a guy in the Scion Xb was killed, when a F-150 hit him from 25MPH and pushed him under a city bus. The driver of the Scion Xb was killed. I looked for the damage on the F-150 and not even the bumper was pushed it.

Now as for crash ratings, how vehicles are rated is they the federal agency will take your vehicle, crash it upon a wall. Supposedly if your vehicle weights 2800lbs, it'll create equal force and then they rate your vehicle. Reality is, over 50% of vehicles sold are truck category, so what are the chances you'll hit another 2800lbs vehicle? As it is, you jump and hit a Taurus a few hundred pounds more and your already in a losing battle.

And most importantly, never hit a Crown Vic/Grand Marquis. Those vehicles have a Body on Frame platform. In other words, they crash like a truck and you'll lose every time. So if you ever lose control, or a cop is chasing someone, just avoid the Crown Vic.

Hope this helps...
