I’ve wanted to be a doctor for a long time and am really interested in oncology- especially paediatric. Does anyone work as an oncologist? Do you find the career stimulating and rewarding? Any advantages/disadvantages? Thanx

Yes I've worked as a doctor in Oncology. I found it rewarding and very interesting, but also fairly heart-breaking as while you can do your best to make patients as comfortable as possible, you will inevitably be faced with patients that you cannot cure and who die on you. This can be really quite challenging, because as a doctor you want to be able to make everyone better. It can be quite emotionally draining to watch someone you have cared for for a long time pass away. I have also worked in Paediatric Oncology, which is doubly rewarding and doubly heart-breaking.

I enjoyed working in that field, but I am now happy as a GP. You didn't mention what stage of your training you are at. My advice to you would be not to make any decisions about what you want to specialise in at an early stage, just go through your training and discover what interests you as you go along. I changed my mind several times, and that was after I had been a doctor in a variety of fields for several years. Good luck to you!

I know a neonatal nurse oncologist. There are some lows and highs, but it all depends on what you like I guess. She has been doing it for a long time and she likes what she does, but sometimes people die. It's part of life.

My ex wants to do that, she's qualified, but has really struggled to find a job because it's such a popular vocation. She has had to work in plastic surgery for a year becuase she can't find anything in oncology.
If you expect good grades, you will be able to get a job, otherwise don't bother.

It depends on you. What are you passionate about? Are you willing to go to school for that long?
