I have put one of my DVDs into the drive, and the format it is in is "example.VOB". How do I transfer this to iTunes? Do I need additional software?
Also, does anyone know how to convert ".wmv" files to ".mov" files?
Thanks!

Thanks for those comments, but has anyone got any suggestions of free software that I can get easily and that is definitely virus-free?

The easiest way to convert DVDs/video for your 5G iPod.
Eliminate all of those bulky encoding and ripping programs, and use this one slightly bulky program. It's a completely free application called Videora iPod Converter. You can convert from almost any format (AVI, MPEG, VOB [DVD], etc) into MPEG-4 or H.264 encoded video with video/audio bitrates and a resolution of your choice.

If you're going to rip DVDs into Videora, you first need to combine the movie's VOB files into one using DVD Shrink, and then import that VOB into Videora.

Videora iPod Converter (freeware):

DVD Shrink (freeware):

[Download] http://files.dvdr-digest.com/encode/...ink32setup.zip

Encoding downloaded videos into Videora is easy and self explanatory. Just open the program and you'll figure it out. Encode in H.264 with a 768kbps video bitrate for best quality. If you've got a DVD and want to encode it, read on.

Getting DVDs into Videora:
1) Download and install DVD Shrink from the above link.
---You only need to do the following two steps once---
2) Open DVD Shrink, and go to Edit -> Preferences...
3) Go to the Output Files tab, and uncheck Split VOB files into 1GB size chunks. Click OK.
---Continue----
4) Click the Re-Author button on the top of the window.
5) Find your DVD drive in the DVD Browser list, and open it. Drag the Main Movie to the left half of the window.
6) Click on the Compression Settings tab in the right half, and then pick No Compression in the drop down menu for video compression (it says Automatic by default).
7) Only check off the audio track you want encoded to your iPod/iTunes (probabaly the first one). None of the subtitles will be converted, so you can uncheck all of those, too.
8) Click the Backup! button on top. Wait patiently as DVD Shrink analyzes your movie.
9) In the Select backup target drop down, select Hard Disk Folder. In the next box, type wherever you want your DVD files saved. Press OK and wait while it does its stuff (may take up to 20 minutes).
10) Once it's done, open Videora. Click Transcode New Video, and navigate to the folder you chose in DVD Shrink for backing up the movie. Open the VIDEO_TS folder.
11) There should be a VOB file in the folder, select it and begin encoding however you like.

you will have trouble finding a free software, if you know someone with a archos player... they could record your dvds to avi spec which will transfer better into itunes.. as you cannot just do it from a pc dvd recorder.... the dvd is split into 2 sections.. audio and video.. and if you just try to copy the 'vob' files it wont work

Yes you need additional software. So what you need to do is do a search in yahoo for a media converter. some of them are free normally these with the basic stuff in it. and you will have to pay for these with alot of features
Just make sure the one you get work with the formats you are dealing with.
Good luck to you.
