How are those two positions compatible?
What possible reason could anyone have to be against abortion unless they realize it kills a human being? Nobody is against tonsillectomies, for example.
If this is true, and you realize abortion kills a living human, why SHOULD a woman (or anyone else for that matter) have the right to choose whether that human being lives or dies?

Heidi: If such is the case, why do so many pro-choice people (including former President Clinton) say they want to make abortion "safe, legal, and rare"? If it is not taking a life, why do you care if it's rare? Why not give out balloons and gift certificates for Applebee's for all abortions?

catrionn: Obviously, you do not feel abortion kills a human being. While we disagree, you're not the target of this question. I am pointing out the hypocrisy of those who obviously have moral qualms about the act, yet still want to enshrine a woman's right to choose.

steve: Where do you find one word of a religious nature in my question? How hard is it for people to answer a simple two-part question? 1) Do you agree with "A"? 2) If "A" is true, how can "B" logically follow?
It's not legislating morality, it's legislating consistency. Further, I have no interest in legislating squat in any state other than my own. I feel this is a matter for the several state legislatures, not SCOTUS.

docmandingo: Please cite another reason why anyone would be against abortion. I have yet to read anyone jumping up and down and turning backflips of joy about the concept of abortion. Even most pro-choicers say, "We don't like abortion, but..."

The two are incompatible. Who knew pro-choice individuals were hypocrites?
With regards to hiche-whatever: Once an ovum has been fertilized, its genetic disposition is complete. To refer to it as anything but a human being is to deny basic biology.

This is a very hard question and the way pro-choice people see it is until birth it's not a human being, but it is a potential human being. As a society we pretty much agree with this because we don't consider a miscarriage as a death or abortion as murder.
At the beginning it's all up to the woman or girl if she wants to have a baby. No one would ever know if she had an abortion in the earliest part of pregnancy, unless we plan to force all girls and women who might be pregnant to get tested all the time! As the birth gets closer people get unhappy with very late abortions.
Almost everyone agrees abortion is never a good thing but many of us know sometimes giving birth is worse. Giving birth can even kill the woman or girl. These are not common but we have to let women and girls save their lives!
We have to respect the life, health and the wishes of the women in this country who don't want to die, suffer injury or give birth if they don't want to so we have to keep abortion safe and legal, but at the same time we should help out with contraception, the morning after pill, sex ed and other ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy AND keep abortion rare and unnecessary if we can.
As a society we have to remember that making a woman or girl a mother when she doesn't want the child is bad for everyone. if you don't trust her to make a choice how can you trust her to raise a child?

better halves and daughters are nevertheless being stoned or caned or whipped particularly cultures for becoming to be pregnant through fact of husband allowed rape via cronies friends. they're nevertheless wearing burkas! those will proceed no count number if abortion maintains or ceases. practise is at no lack as to delivery administration and guidance on all strategies is at fingertip attain. enable's handle the actual explanation why the deadly beatings and burkas one after the different from delivery administration and abortion. As adult men or women persons we've complete extraordinary unto our own bodies yet no longer unto yet another's physique. Oops, my mistake...purely found out that suicide is prohibited as is assisted self euthanasia. those are human beings subject concerns and not women persons's subject concerns. All inequity between women and adult men persons or women persons and adult men is a human beings difficulty and needs around the board correction and help. Me! :- )

Your premise that "they realize it kills a human being" is badly flawed. It has never been scientifically determined when the fetus becomes a human being. The American Medical Association has failed to come to a definitive conclusion on this issue.
You have asserted your OPINION. And I diasgree with it.
Moreover, if you take the extreme position that the precursors to life constitute a "human being," then one would have to conclude that fertility clinics all over the country are holding millions of "human beings" prisoner. Why are your knickers not in a twist over this?

No mystery here.
There are lots of behaviors that some people will say they are against personally, but that they do not think should be banned by law.
Drinking alcohol
Smoking cigarettes
Smoking pot
Eating meat
Chewing tobacco
Owning a gun
Listening to rap music
Homosexual behavior
Painting your car an ugly color
Shooting animals
Just about everyone can think of at least ONE behavior that fits this description for themselves.

First of all, the woman "chose" to have unprotected sex. She is the responsible (or irresponsible) party here, NOT the man or anyone else for that matter. A woman has to choose which way her ethics will go. If she made the decision to conceive, she needs to make the decision that will work best for the child. If that child becomes fatally ill in the womb, or compromises the life of the mother, then the mother needs to make a decision of whether or not the risk is something she or anyone else live with. If I knew that only half of my baby's brain and heart formed and that he/she would die without question, I'd terminate the pregnancy. No hesitation. If my daughter was raped, I'd take her to get the abortion! I'd rather lose the embryo than my daughter! Regardless of the situation, it should be the womans decision. But its her decision to do the right thing because she will have to live with it for the rest of her life.

Because it isn't killing a human being, it is stopping a fertilized egg from BECOMING a human being. It is also not the greatest thing to experience, and not the right CHOICE for everyone. And yes, if a tonsillectomy is elective, people are against it.

Jeeze, you are right. I have seen the error of my ways and will now join the Republican party and become anti-abortion. Thank you for saving me from burning in an everlasting Lake of Fire. Is that what you want us to say? Good luck.

Why should a fertilized egg be allowed to barge into my uterus, suck up all my nutrients, make me nauseous and sick, and then create incredible pain coming out of me after nine months?
I'm on birth control. By doing this, I have expressly forbidden any fetuses from taking up residence inside me.
If I were to get pregnant anyway, I'd feel exactly the same way as I'd feel if, despite my locked doors and burglar alarm system, somebody broke into my house.
