You mentioned 4x4, so then I'll stick to the ones that have the better 4x4 system. Although, if you don't need full-time 4x4, there's many crossovers now which can accomplish the same, but with better fuel economy, but since you mentioned 4x4 SUV, I'll stick to the main ones.

Most popular is the Explorer which is also rated highly in crash testing, and it's Stability Control system includes Roll Sensor Control which if it notices (worse case senario) you going to flip, the bags already inflate on the sides (canopy) to protect you. Plus you have the availability of a V6, or V8, although the V6 uses almost the same amount of fuel of the V8, so I just advice people to go with the V8 anyhow. The vehicle was just remodeled again for 2006, so it's much quieter than before.

I appreciate features like being able to open the rear window, instead of the whole hatch. The 3rd row seat is actually the largest in it's class and you can have decent people sitting in there. Rear suspension is a class exclusive Independent Rear Suspension which allows for the floor to be lower there.

Insurance is pretty inexpensive for them because of their good crash ratings, and parts are always easy to find long term.

That pretty much is the safe bet I usually advice on.

There's a few other vehicles in this segment like the...

Trailblazer which is getting killed soon, and replaced with the Outlook/Arcadia, crossovers being introduced.

Pathfinder which gets a V8 this year, although it's not as spacious and parts are expensive.

Commander, which is being killed off because of slow sales, it's really just a lengthened Grand Cherokee, but for the size it's pretty small, claustrophobic interior and the styling might not suit everyone.

Then there's the 4Runner, but I haven't been hearing many positive things about the new ones with current owners I know, the quality is not as it used to be. But it's another option you have.

I own an 07 Ford Explorer XLT. I love my SUV, very safe! I will never own a foreign vehicle. Way to expensive to maintain and to fix! Plus I would rather keep my hard earned money in the US! Buy an American Vehicle!
