I think Taiwan should be recognized as an independent country.
They are an ally of America's and worth fighting with China about because we have promised Taiwan we will defend them and we have warned China we will defend Taiwan. We must keep our word and our honor. If we don't we really have fallen a long way.

It isn't important how I consider Taiwan...it's important how Taiwan considers Taiwan and how the rest of the world (most especially China) responds.

Taiwan wants to be independent and China wants its territory back. The Taiwanese are refugees from the Chinese civil war/Communist revolution...they are the old Chaing Kai Chek faction and they lost the war. Those who survived fled to the island of Taiwan and the new Communist government in China was too busy subduing the mainland to worry over much about rebels on an offshore island.

It's a very ticklish diplomatic situation. Taiwan is prosperous, economically and technically way ahead of the mainland. They are capitalistic and absolutely not interested in Communism. They may go the way of Hong Kong and return to the Chinese fold in name only but retain their economic independence. They are certainly not worth fighting with China over.
