Ooo, lots of reasons, and I'm suprised no one else has answered.

First off, all reptiles are food at some point for other animals. Carnivorous reptiles reduce the population of household pests like rats, and are good to have around. Alligators dig "gator holes" and supply a souce of water for other animals during drought. Alligators also act as "theft deterrents" in bird rookeries, no raccons will get to raid nests if there's a gator around. When an alligator, crocodile, or other large carnivorous lizard (monitors, etc.) feeds, they have to tear larger food items apart; this in turn feeds fish, turtles, birds, and all kinds of other animals. Gopher Tortoises and other burrowing tortoises provide shelter for other animals. Up to 150 other species than gopher tortoises can be found in their burrows or are at least dependent for these burrows for food or shelter during forest fires. (They're Florida's original condominium builder)

I'm not in full brain-wracking mood, so that's all I'm gonna give.
