How do you instruct Magnetic tape?

i have an assignment and i have no idea what the professor means by discribe how magnetic tape is instructed can anyone help me or provide a DIRECT link to information on it please

You use an electromagnet to magnetize part of the tape. You do it in series and as the tape moves over a magnetic reader it reads whether there is a magnetic field (1) or no field (0) evenly spaced.
