What kind of visa are you talking about?
If it's a B visa for travelers/visitors, you can get one pretty quickly. However, most B visas are only issued for 6 months. You can renew these, but it is very difficult to renew them while still in the USA. It's usually much easier to go back to your home country and get another 6 month visa.
Most work visas are issued for one year, and can be renewed.

It took one of my colleagues about 10 weeks to get a year long visa last autumn.
Also meant to say that it was a work visa.

I'm thinking of doing the same and I was advised to contact the US Embassy in London and they'll be the best people to advise you and send you any forms etc thatyou need.
