I'd like to know what other people think is the reasoning behind the title of the movie "Closer". This is the movie with Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Clive Owen, and Julia Roberts.

Hmmm...that's a good question. I haven't seen this in a while, but I would guess that it's because of the ending where Jude Law's character takes a closer look at that wall, where he and Alice/Jane first met, and found out she had taken her the name from the one on the wall.

I found an answer on imdb about the question you asked, and it could be right too:

i still think the word Closer is a noun, someone who closes the door. at the beginning of the movie the Portman character says "it is easy to leave. just say 'i don't love you. please leave.'" and then at the end of the movie she tells the guy "i don't love you anymore. please leave." she shut the door.

One of the taglines is "If you believe in love at first sight, sometimes you need to look closer."

So closer could refer to becoming more intimate.

I've always taken the title of the play (on which the movie was based) to be an ironic commentary on what happens when people who (ostensibly) love one another actually get CLOSER.

It's a pretty bleak outlook, but I think that Patrick Marber (playwright/screenwriter) is saying that the CLOSER we get to one another, the more damage we're likely to do.
