There are people around whom we "know". What makes a person a "friend"?

My great aunt, whom I was very close to when she was alive gave me a little plaque that read...

A friend is one that comes... when all others leave. (That little plaque is most cherished possession)

A true friend sticks by you in times of trouble.

An aquaintance or associate is someone you know and perhaps do bussiness with .
A friend may have a larger definition. There are as many different levels of friendship as there are people . You can start being a friend as soon as the other person is friendly towards you in a manner that you may concider loving . A friend will have your best interest in mind and will be willing to help or listen to you . Friends usually ( and hopefully ) don't set conditions for being friends . As long as you have a give and take relationship I suppose you can say you are friends .

A "good" friend is:
Someone you can really piss off and they love you anyway; and visa versa.
Someone that's got your back because they know you've got theirs.
Someone who is honest with you even if it hurts.
An enduring friend is an extended part of your family because they are really a part of you and you to them.
Someone who you TRUST, ADMIRE, RELATE TO, and turn to when there is no one else.
Some people might consider some of their acquaintances as friends and for some people that is enough, just to know someone might be enough to make them their friend. I suppose it's all about how you look at things. And honestly, when I want to actually "define" something, I still look for the definition in no less than 3 places so I can REALLY understand what the concept behind the word means. A friend IS NOT someone you generally feel bad about yourself around, or have to defend yourself to, or have to sacrifice your own well being for. Hope my views give you some good ideas. My final words are: If you want a GOOD friend, you must be a GOOD friend. BoL

Friend is a strong word. It takes a few steps to be a friend and a huge sacrifice to remain as a friend, i don't think it can be defined, its a a relation which brings the best between 2 people or a group. It is a relation worth dying for.

I think a friend is an extension of urself without which u r not complete. A friend is one who advices like a father, cares like a mother, guides like a teacher and brings a smile to your face like a true friend does. A friend is some one who can give you love, courage, help and advice when u need and will only listen when asked to do so and not go around ranting advice. a friend can complete ur sentences, but if urs doesn't then that doesn't mean, he/she is not a true friend- u just haven't known each other for too long.

A person that you can call in a time of need and they will be there for you no matter what. They don't judge you and they understand who you are and love you. They are like family, but better, since they love you without the benefit of being related to you.

A friend will be there for you no matter what it is, when you need them. A friend is considered family. A friend will watch your back. A friend would die for you. A friend will love you. A friend is there till the end.*
