Basketball was first played in 1891. Dr. James Naismith created basketball for the purpose of entertaining the men in the navy or something. The sport became serious later on. There were several leagues that were created for basketball. They were not national, though.
In 1947, the NBA was created. The first superstar was George Mikan of the Minneapolis Lakers(now known as the Los Angeles Lakers.)
