"Believe in"? Not too sure what you mean by that. We all believe that royalty exists, obviously.

Many believe in the truth of ideas and values expressed by Queen Elizabeth, King Juan Carlos, Queen Beatrix, Queen Rania and so on. These days, most monarchs give their governments good non-partisan and long-view advice. A quick look at the screwed-up republics around us will show you how valuable that perspective can be.

As for royalty's precious things, consider that in its wider context -- especially since many of those precious symbols are actually owned by us people, not royalty. And look at all those precious things surrounding the U.S. president.

Indeed, our sorry world now has to cope with the whims of 800 billionaires. How do you think royalty's stuff compares with the precious baubles played with by the families of Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Ken Thomson and so on?

The real question should be, why don't the mega-rich serve the public as well as most royals do?
