... just like Edwards kept $700,000 in Medicare taxes away from our grandparents.

Is that fair?

I thought Dems were in favor of doing all they can to help the poor and average American.

Oh, they are as long as someone else pays for it.

No. It isn't fair but that's why they keep running for office. Perks! What have they passed for the common folks that is as big a benefit to us as what they keep for (and to) themselves. My question is---Why do people continue to vote for these people? As long as they have all been in office, don't you think they should have all of those tired old campaign promises fulfilled by now? Actually, a flat sales tax is the only fair way to go. Everyone pays according to what they spend. Do you realize how many people make good money but never pay taxes? Why is it left up to the working people and property owners? We're the ones making fewer bucks and paying for the freeloaders. We had a guy in the earily 90's that tried to get a 2% sales tax passed in Oregon. If anyone would have read up on it, they would have seen what a good thing it would have been all the way around, but it included a clause stating that it could only be raised by a 2/3's majority vote of registered voters so the Libs. in the government got REAL busy scaring people away from the idea. It would have eliminated all lisence fees, permit fees, state and local taxes, highway usage fees-- everything-- and still figured out to be more than what the state brings in now. How? Do you realize how much money is made both legally and ilegally that taxes are never paid on? Everything from garage sale money, gambling winnings, prostitution, drugs, whatever, are sources of income that are made but never claimed as income. On the other hand--the money IS spent. That is where things would level out. People traveling through a state (from another state or country) would contribute every time they spent money. Even illegals would be helping support our economy instead of sucking it dry. If you made $25,000 a year, the most you could pay, if you spent every penny of it would be $500, and that wouldn't be scrounged up at the end of the year. It would be pay as you go, which also stops tax evasion. Everyone spends money. If you spend $20.00 and can't afford another forty cents, you probably couldn't afford the $20 in the first place. Even the government would be paying taxes every time they bought a $600 hammer! No exceptions unless it was for very low income people. Issue a tax-exempt card--just like food stamp cards. I would add one more item to his plan. Money going out of the country would be paid on before it leaves the country. This might help eliminate people stockpiling in other countries to avoid paying taxes in the country where they make it! Think about it. Is there any other solution? or do they just continue until they tax us out of existance?

See previous answer, all rich people use estate planning -- that includes rich dems and rich republicans -- it's the republicans who want to do away with the estate tax in it's entirety. At least Kerry, Edwards and Kennedy never voted to abolish the estate tax, as most of the republican sentors did.

ps Most rich people originally got that way through some kind of theft, deception, fraud or government scheme. Highly paid corporate execs get deals from sweetheart boards, and back scratching cronies, it's only fair that they pay more in taxes as they play the game with a stacked deck.

PS It's an ESTATE TAX not a death tax. Only a tiny pecentage of the population has to pay it, it is not immoral, and was supported by the founding fathers, who saw it as a way to reduce the likelihood of having a idle landed aristocracy of inherited wealth, as they had in England and Europe, and instead have a industrious population.

How do you know how much tax the Kennedy's, and the Kerry's pay? Are you their accountant? The taxes paid by the taxpayers are high because the Republican administrations have always supported corporate welfare, on the backs of the taxpayer. We now have a multi-trillion dollar dollar deficit, the highest in the history of mankind. This was created by Republicans, and everyone is responsible, including you, for paying it down.

The Death Tax is immoral. Its unfair that anybody has to pay it.

By the way, so-called Progressive Taxation is unfair. It's hardly fair that a rich person has to pay a higher percentage of taxes than poor people. We should revise the tax code to make the poor pay their fair share and see how many people want big government then because the poor will realize that the regime is based on highway robbery. That's what income redistribution is. Theft.

Depends how you work it, Joe.
A well planned estate can usually avoid heavy taxation through foundations , tax insurance etc.
Get yourself a good accountant and lawyer and you too can share in this great facet of American legislation.

Yes it's fair......it's available to all Americans.
