Choroid Plexus Cysts: found at 18 weeks, now very scared?

my doctor called and told us our baby has a choroid plexus cyst and we need to get a level 2 ultrasound. After researching, I found that this may mean our child has chomosomal defect.Iam 25 and thought I was at low risk of having a child with downs syndrome. How many of you have had a diagnosis of choroid plexus cyst and had healthy babies, I am soo worried, I can't eat or sleep, I am consumed with fear that something is wrong.

CPC is usually a soft marker for a gene abnormality called Edwards Syndrome..also known as trisomony 18 (this is not down syndrome, down syndrome is on chromosone 21).....If I were you I would have an amnio done instead of another ultrasound....an amnio will give you 100% results if in fact there is any abnormality...I wish you the best of luck and hope everything turns out ok.....Good Luck~


PS I would really suggest the amnio because they told me I had a 1% chance of having a down syndrome baby and that I really didnt need the amnio, but I chose to have it and my baby had Down Syndrome....not to scare you, but if you are ever in doubt you should have the amnio done....it will tell you for sure.

I haven't herd of this particular cyst but I am currently 39weeks pregnant with my 2nd daughter.At 12weeks my scan showed a cyst on the umbilical cord and this can also be a sign that the baby will have chomosomal defects. I had to go to a specialist hospital in london for further scans. My advise to you is yes everything is worrying and the time ahead will be hard but don't be rushed or forced into making any decissions until you are sure and know all the facts.Between 12 and 28 weeks I was offered 2 terminations, amniocentesis(could have resulted in miscarrdge so early) and was told a baby will live inside you but with chomosomal defects will die once born. Chomosomal defects are not down syndrome, down syndrome is totally different and if you are low risk then you are low risk. Having a more detailed scan everything on the baby is measured, even the length of the nose, I was scanned for an hour and a half, everything is checked. My cyst never grew and didn't attach to anything. It was at 28weeks that I was told my baby is fine, healthy and growing normally. The last scan I went to was ok and medical staff arn't even worried or going to do tests to see why the cyst ever developed. I hope your baby is all ok and you are as lucky as I am. I know and understand what you are going through and its so hard because it feels like there arn't enough people medically who know about these conditions. I hope you don't have to wait too long for your scan, you shouldn't. Let us know what happens.

Try to remain calm for your baby. I know it's easier said than done! Read the page below. It might ease your worries. You still are low risk in all actuality. When I was on other message boards while pregnant, I remember other women going through the same thing that you are. Try the pregnancy board on WebMD. It was great and also American Baby... I was born with a cyst on my brain and it's still there. It has never affected me my whole life. The only reason I know it's there is because I was in an accident and had to have an MRI done. It's not always bad. I'm normal and have had no symptoms. Good luck. It may resolve itself. Especially if you have no other markers.

I am 22 weeks.
At 18 weeks I had a sono and Dr told me the same thing. He also told me that 75% of babies indicate this early on and that 99.9% of these cysts disappear by week 24. He did not order a level 2 sono, he said that I would get another and 32 weeks. He also said that there must be many other "red flags" combined with this to cause concern. I am 37 years old, and have major concerns over this pregnancy as well but I am comforted by the fact that this seems to be a normal thing with a up to 18 week sono.

Take a deep breath and get your level 2 sono.
