You can store it in a CD, pen drives, and flash memory. Besides that, then yes it's the only place where you can store anything. Or you can have that thing where you store files on RAM but those things can get really expensive for something with low capacity. It'll cost atleast $500 for 4 gigs.

Technically it stores it in a memory buffer first, and then writes the buffer to hard disk or the Windows designated temporary download area, but the answer is yes, it will put anything you download to a temporary location on disk, unless you have specified the location you want to save to.

I assume you are having trouble locating the downloads
If you know the name of the file. Search for the file name, and click on the advanced tab so that it searches hidden directories.
If you are not totally sure of the file name, search under your local profile, and try whatever you downloaded as an "*.exe" wildcard search, or try an advanced search based on date

Try looking for them in "My Documents". Or search for them, if you know part of the file name, using search on the Start menu.

You can buy and external hard drive. You can burn to disc, if you have a CD burner, you can burn to DVD if you have a DVD burner, you can store to flash drives and floppies.
