...its the second time its happened in 6 months. I put my hand in the tank and get a shock. the first time I threw away the lamp and bought another. I use lamps with two power outlets on top, designed for aquariums. I think the lamp casing filled up with condensation which then contacted the tank water, so I mounted the new lamp on inch thick rubber. didn't work because today I got a bad shock again. My fish are all fine though.

Does anyone have any tips or experience with this situation that they would like to share??

Two things:

GFCI wall outlet (or at the very least a GFCI power strip)

Titanium Grounding Probe

Lastly make sure the stray voltage is coming from your lights not another source i.e. heater, powerhead, ect...

Fish are fine because they're not grounded, obviously, some way
or other there's a path through you between the power source
and ground. Figure out where the path goes, and break the cir--cuit
with an insulator (like your 1-inch rubber) and make sure that water is not making a full contact somewhere.

I have experienced this problem before many times. A glass top over the tank between the water and the light should take care of the problem, but you really need to also make sure that circuit is grounded before you or someone else gets hurt.

Check the cable.
Sealed the cable.
Use a plastic tube or glass tube to cover the lamp.
Create a separate place for the lamp.
Never close the top of the aquarium with glass or plastic.

you need to buy the top that fits the aquarium perfect. the one that goes with your tank brand. i had that problem once and i got a new cover and the light bulbs have great seals around them and i have used it for over a year and never had a problem.
