The name "Jock" is indeed Scottish and is a version of the name "John". English people refer to Scottish People as "Jocks "in the same way that they call the Irish "Paddies". As John is one of the commonest names "Jock" is often used to represent the common people : as in "We're all Jock Tamson's bairns." meaning "we are all the same"

It has to do with food, but it's origins are obscure. One's lunch, particularly when taken to eat at work in sandwich or similar form was referred to as "jock", hence "jock tin" for its container, and "jock bag" for the bag or satchel, typically an ex-army gas-mask bag with shoulder strap, used to carry it.
